Weight loss revelation: Why you must gain muscle

Ever seen a thin/fat person?  Come on, yes you have.  They don’t overeat, they look like they could use quite a bit of toning, and may appear to be slumping and frail.

We women often just wish for thinness forgetting that it looks and feels better to have plenty of muscle tone.

I’ve learned that for every pound of muscle we burn approximately 50 calories a day.  Can you imagine what a boost your weight loss efforts would have if you focused on strength training?

Women don’t gain as much muscle as men (and probably wouldn’t want to) but, can you imagine gaining just 5 pounds of muscle?  That translates to about an extra 250 calories burned every day-even if you don’t “move a muscle”.  Pair that with your daily exercise and you should lose weight in no time.

What exercises help you gain muscle?  Anything which uses resistance like push ups, pull ups, yoga, pilates, weight lifting, squats…take your pick.

If you don’t have time for a “work-out” every day, just LIVE.

When you clean the house, bend your knees (so you don’t hurt your back).

Mow the lawn (pushing a mower, not riding one).

Have sex with your spouse and don’t be lazy about it.

Play with the kids (they’ll make you do tons of lifts and squats).

Take the stairs

Wash your own care instead of taking it through an automatic wash

In general, pay attention to your body when you move and move in a way that doesn’t strain your back or neck, and you’ll find your muscles will be sore in a good way.

Any other suggestions out there on how to get strong and fit without “working out”?  We’re eager to hear about it in the comments!
