March and April 2013 Resolutions

For January and February my goal was small because this is the hardest time of the year for me.  Winter wears me out and the lack of warm sunny days challenges my healthy lifestyle habits.  There’s something about the cold and how it makes me want to cuddle up on the couch with some tea and enjoy my biggest not-so-guilty pleasure, White Collar with Alex.

My goal was just to practice giving my presentations about diabetes in Spanish.  And so I did.  My problem has been more about a lack of fluidity between tricky words and sentences versus not knowing what to say or how to say it.  It’s worked for me at jobs in the past but when giving a presentation it seems important that a message come across smoothly.  With each presentation I’m doing better and the fear of speaking Spanish is behind me, um, mostly.

Now onward to March and April, or just err…April.  Spring is here and while allergies cause me a lot of serious fatigue (seriously, the body just. shuts. down.) I am still eager to enjoy warmer weather and longer days.  Of course, as I type this at 6:46pm on a Sunday in Spring I’ll admit it has been snowing all day.  Go figure.

My goal is to jump back into exercise.  Not that I ever stopped but I since Winter is a hard time for me-a time of surviving versus thriving if you will, I did just enough to get by.  I feel the need to sweat more.  I need to get toxins out.  This is a perfect time because Spring naturally brings greens and berries with it which help detox the body.

I realize this post is super late but I have been working on my goal all month.  Every other day my workout is a tad more intense and that’s enough to make a big difference in my body and energy levels.  So far so good!

*A few days later*

I’m now on day three of a juice fast.  I’m juicing mostly vegetables and only consuming that and water.  It’s been really awesome thus far.  A post on the entire experience to come.  I gotta see how long I can go first SmileDuring this time it’s just been yoga, which I’m surprised I can even do while on a juice fast in the first place.  Who knew?

2012 March and April Resolutions

It’s Fabulous Friday!  Self love sometimes means getting very disciplined about forming a new habit or completing a goal.  My type 1 sister, Ana and I are doing just that this year:

Ana’s January and February goal was to stretch every day.  She didn’t quite do it BUT her March/April Resolution was to test her blood sugar more often and she just so happened to do that all through January and February which is pretty awesome.  So now she’ll try to keep that up and stretch, too.

My Jan/Feb goal was to complete my little eBook:  “How to Start Your Own Diabetes Blog” and I did!  It really helped me to have a deadline on this and sufficient time to work on it without juggling 10 other goals.

For March and April I want to focus on healthy eating.  It’s not easy, particularly lately that I’m so busy, but I know it makes a huge difference in the way I think, feel, and manage blood sugars.

So what do you want to do by the end of April?

2012 New Year’s Resolutions

I once wrote a short fiction story for school where we lived in a super modern society, drove cars through the air like the Jetsons, and travelled to outer space with the same casual ease with which we now travel to a nearby city.  I wrote that this all took place in the year 2012.  We didn’t exactly meet my childhood expectations for the future but that doesn’t mean we can’t set out to meet our own expectations for the future.

I know New Year’s Resolutions get a bad rap.  It’s because people write a list of things they want for the year with no plan or serious steps involved in getting those things.  For the past two years I’ve followed Leo Babauta’s (of the immensely successful Zen Habits) 6 Changes Method.  It’s simple really, you just spend two consecutive months focusing on one habit you want to make, one change you want to implement, and by the end of the year you’ve made your way through 6 changes.

Ana is going to do this with me this year.  Here are our goals:

Ana’s New Year’s Resolutions

January/February Stretch everyday

I used to be on a dance team up until my junior year of high school. It wasn’t until about a year after that I realized how much of an impact regular stretching had on the way I felt everyday. I definitely took my flexibility for granted and now I have to start nearly from scratch to get back to where I used to be. My goal is to reach that point again and then to exceed it. To do this, I’m going to start stretching everyday, just a little at a time because my muscles are so tight right now that it hurts!

March/April Check glucose levels more often

My blood sugar levels have been all over the place for a while now, so one thing I’m determined to do is start checking more often so I’m not in the dark and caught off guard as much. I often get caught in the bad habit of being lazy about checking and assuming I know roughly what my blood sugar level is, so my goal is to resist the urge to do that. I might have to start off using alarms…

May/June Eat less processed food

One of my biggest struggles while I’m away at school is eating well. I’ve mentioned before that it’s difficult to keep fresh food fresh in my dorm and it’s also hard to maintain a regular meal schedule where I can eat real food and not just snacks from vending machines. I’m going to start by not keeping a bunch of processed food in my room where I’ll be easily tempted (aside from a few emergency snacks for lows). I’ll buy more raw fruits and vegetables (in the smallest amounts possible so they don’t go bad before I can finish them) and I’ll do some research on other healthy snacks and meals that I can find within campus dining.

July/August Research graduate schools/programs

I’m planning on going to graduate school to get my masters degree in fine arts, and application deadlines will loom over me in less than a year. As much as the thought of graduate school freaks me out, I have to admit I’m also very excited about it. Two years to focus just on my artwork surrounded by other talented artists? Yes, please. Anyway, I have to start seriously researching different programs and gathering all necessary materials to start applying! I’m going to make sure to set aside a few hours a week to do this.

September/October Educate myself on presidential candidates and vote!

I have to say that politics have hardly ever interested me. I usually start zoning out when people talk about it and because of that, I don’t know much on the subject. With the next presidential election coming up, my goal is to learn about the candidates so I can make an educated vote as opposed to a blind vote or no vote at all.

November/December Post on my art website regularly

I’ve been struggling to maintain my art website since I started it, so my goal for the last two months of 2012 is to regularly update it with photos of my work and posts about things I’ve learned, what I’m doing, my plans, etc. I have lots of things to post, it’s just the discipline to set aside time for it that I lack. Hopefully, the consistent new content will help attract more viewers and make it easier for me to keep posting regularly.

Sysy’s New Year’s Resolutions

January/February  Finish Diabetes Blog Series

Exactly a year ago I unveiled an idea I had to write up a general guide about how to start one’s own diabetes blog.  Then I panicked and didn’t do it.  I started up again the other day and realized that even though I’m not an expert, I can at least share the little I know in hopes that someone out there who is itching to start their own diabetes blog will feel comfortable enough to go ahead and do it.  I wouldn’t mind if you remind me I’m supposed to do this.

March/April  Focus on healthy eating habits

I may have to do this every year but it’s because eating is a complicated issue for me (you can probably relate) and I find that I have to always put a lot of effort into sticking with my goals of healthy eating.  Sometimes it’s difficult because there isn’t a lot of money for healthy food and sometimes anxiety/depression is rearing it’s ugly head.  Either way, it pays for me to spend some time every year focusing on what I really want to eat.  Plus, it’s a good time to learn new recipes!

May/June  Focus on health coaching business

I can technically start seeing clients at the very end of this month but the other day while talking with my health coach, I realized all the different tasks I’ve been up to lately.  And I realized that if I’m not careful I will end up sorely neglecting the things most important to me like my health, my kids, and my husband.  So, I am going to take it slow and focus on balance.  I feel my best during late Spring and Summer months so that is when I’ll tackle this with more energy.

July/August  Write up and send book proposals.

Ok, I’ve put this off long enough.  I was reminded of this quote the other day:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

And it struck me…that this is our deepest fear.  I’m literally more afraid of writing a blog post that people enjoy more than I’m afraid of writing a blog post that no one reads.  And I do ask myself, “Who am I to write a book?”  It’s time to meet that fear head on.

September/October  Focus on diabetes advocacy

This is so near and dear to me and I’d like to put some extra focus on it.  I know it seems I already eat, breathe, and live diabetes because of this blog but, due to the nature of diabetes, don’t we all?  I think it will be fun and meaningful to dig deeper into diabetes advocacy issues.

November/December  ?

I don’t know, yet.  I guess I can’t see that far ahead this time.  I’m sure something will pop up and need my attention by then :)

New Year’s Resolutions for May and June

For March and April my goal was to get organized. 

The house is far from where I want it .  We did manage to throw out a lot of things we don’t need, therefore reducing clutter.  I learned that if I make it a workout, cleaning can go by pretty quickly.  I got one of the kids to help me with constantly picking up the living room (the boy helps, the girl prances about like a princess).  I am also getting less and less fearful about throwing things away or giving them away.  I grew up keeping all sorts of items because I could give meaning or think of a memory for anything.  Now, I’m learning to just let go of my attachment to material things.  It feels good to know that none of it really matters.  The best part about organizing is having diabetes related supplies all in one place for once.  I also have prescription expiration dates notedand prescription refills synchronized and hopefully this system will streamline the whole “diabetes stuff” related hassles. 

Anyway, onward to May and June!  My goal is to focus on creating.  I write for my blog every day, I write for other publications, I work on a forum, and I’m writing a book.  I’m also supposed to take care of the house and my twins during the day.  My kids being the most important job here means I have to focus on them during the day and find a time when they’re sleeping to work- instead of trying to do it while watching them.  It’s seriously a wonder I write at all considering so much of it is done with two little people on my lap trying to steal my mouse and delete my work.  So as much as I’m dreading it (because I treasure sleep) I know I’m going to have to wake up early every day to write.  Luckily, I’ve got two whole months to get into this habit.  Working at night is not a good option because the computer is in the bedroom and my husband goes to work early so this night owl needs to turn into an early bird. 

Any tips from any of you early risers?

New Year’s Resolution for March/April

 

My goal for January and February was to lose 10 pounds.  I lost 6 on the scale and my body has some shifted weight.  For example, clothes is tighter in places where I might have built more muscle, and looser in places where I’ve lost fat.  So although I didn’t hit my 10 pound goal, at least I’m moving in the right direction.  I’ve gained a lot of strength rather quickly by working out with the kettle bell and am currently strong enough to no longer buckle under the weight of my toddlers (Seriously, I feel like I could lift my husband off of the ground but he won’t let me attempt it).  I feel like Winter really isn’t the right time for weight loss goals.  It feels more like the right time to read on the couch with a cup of coffee while wearing some warm socks.  I’ll stick with the kettle bell and see what else happens.

Anyway, for March and April my goal is to get organized.  I’m tempted to post pictures of my room here for you to see and believe but my husband and other family members read this blog and they might be mortified.  So for everyone’s sake, you’ll have to take my word on this.  I’m pretty much sloppy, my husband works a lot of hours, and that last comment really is no excuse.  Things have to change.  I’m taking two whole months to focus on this, maybe starting one room at a time?  Are any of you a sort of neat freak that can offer me tips?  Anyone have suggestions on minimalism?  I’d like to get rid of a lot of useless stuff but don’t even know where to start.

Sidenote:  I call them resolutions, but you can call it a goal, change, new habit, or an improvement.  The key is to not stand still this year.  Make something better.  And don’t say you can’t.  Because then you won’t.

Perspective Helps

 

Something that has helped me A LOT in the past (diabetes-wise) was to have a paradigm shift or change in perspective about certain things. 

For example, I still struggle with feeling “poor” sometimes and yet, thinking about those who have no home, no food, no family, or no clean water quickly snaps me back into the “rich” category.

I’ve said this before but, I used to have a terrible time getting my blood sugar to stay below 200.  My goal was that: to keep it below 200.  I would fail miserably and endure lots of 300’s and 400’s. 

Then I thought to myself, “maybe my target should change?”  So I started aiming for 100-all the time.  No mind that this isn’t possible, the point was, shouldn’t I be aiming at the right place in the first place?  Then when I get a little outside my target zone at least I’m still not doing too bad?

I thought this was a silly thing to think although I tried it anyway.  And I couldn’t believe it but, it worked!

It was the equivalent of raising my own bar.  It was bringing up my expectations.  As a result, my actions met these expectations and I got much closer to where I needed to be. 

A major change in perspective also helped me in another crucial area:

I used to feel like the most unlucky gal in the world because of having type 1 diabetes.  And so I blamed every single negative thing in life on my diabetes.  I didn’t push myself through college because: diabetes.  I didn’t have confidence in myself because: diabetes.  I didn’t exercise regularly because: diabetes.  I wasn’t happy because: diabetes.

The truth is that diabetes DOES make everything in life harder.  I know that.  I want you to know I know that.  Problem is, not taking care of our diabetes will eventually make life EVEN harder later! 

I often think, “It’s like I can’t win”.  Maybe you do too, sometimes.  Well, we’ve got to scratch that line from our brains.  We need to just focus on how we’re alive (others have not made it to whatever age we’re at).  We have a roof over our heads (many others do not).  We can afford insulin (unbelievably so, some cannot).  And many of us still have the ability to gently exercise each day, have confidence in ourselves and be happy simply because we choose to, and push forward with our dreams and aspirations even though we’ll have to push much harder than others.  We can! 

And having the right perspective…helps.

PS: Don’t let any negative person tell you that diabetics don’t want to hear that perspective helps.  If we’re humble, we’ll know it’s the truth and if we let it, it helps.
